Soak up too much sun on holiday and you’ll be paying the price in years to come (hello, premature ageing), but it’s not all bad news. With a few clever packing tweaks, you can look stylish, stay protected and enjoy your sun holiday. Here’s how…
*1. Pack a broad spectrum sunscreen *
Warm, sunny weather is good for the soul, but the golden rule for enjoying it safely is to protect your skin. Look for a broad spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVA rays (largely responsible for ageing and skin cancer) and UVB rays (think ‘B’ for burning), and don’t go below SPF15.
*2. Wear a wide-brimmed hat *
Up to 90 per cent of skin ageing is estimated to be caused by sun exposure. Double your armour by wearing a wide-brimmed hat in the sun; it will keep the sun off your face and ensure you stay protected.
*3. Protect your hair *
If you colour or chemically treat your hair, make a UV protective haircare product your new best friend. Colour fade, dryness and damage are all accelerated by exposing your hair to the sun. Spritz liberally over your hair then plait or twist up into a messy bun for an easy daytime look. Come the evening, take down for stylish, beachy waves.
4. Pack your oversized sunglasses
Your favourite sunnies do more than allow you to read on the beach. Providing you own a good quality pair, with inbuilt UV protection, they help protect the health of your eyes too. As an added bonus, in covering a greater surface area, oversized sunglasses can help protect the thin, delicate skin under and around your eyes. Great for helping to prevent crow’s feet! Bon voyage!
