At Speedo, we have always believed that swimming should be accessible to everyone. We believe that in the water there is freedom, achievement, excitement and pure, childlike joy, qualities that can make your life better, whatever unique barriers you face along the way.
“Our mission is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition for all children and adults with intellectual (learning) disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in sharing skills, gifts and friendship.”
Speedo has provided kit and financial support to Special Olympics GB since 2012, and this year we became an official Games Supporter for Sheffield 2017, Special Olympics’ 10th Annual Games. The event took place between August 7 and August 12, with swimming events being held at Ponds Forge as well as 19 other sports, ranging from powerlifting to golf. Over 2600 athletes were able to compete at the games, making it the biggest disability multi-sports event to take place in the UK in 2017.
As a recognised member of the Olympic Movement, it is part of Special Olympics GB’s mission to help its athletes to progress through their sports to be able to compete at the Paralympics. Held every four years, the National Games is a chance for the elite Paralympians of tomorrow to gain experience and interact with other athletes and coaches from around the country. Who knows, maybe some of the medallists of Sheffield 2017 will go on to be Paralympic stars of Tokyo 2020?
There are currently 150 Special Olympics clubs in Great Britain who rely on over 4000 volunteers to help deliver programs to over 10000 athletes. Why not get involved? If you’d like to learn more about Special Olympics GB, go to specialolympicsgb.org.uk.
