SIXTH BEIJING GOLD FOR PHELPS

Things are heating up at the swimming with more medals and records being broken in the Speedo LZR Racer®. The US national anthem was ringing around the Cube this morning. Michael Phelps (USA) took his gold medal haul to six while fellow Americans Ryan Lochte and Rebecca Soni also added to the tally.
Phelps broke his 6th World Record (WR) of the games this morning in the 200m Individual Medley. After just picking up the gold in the 200m backstroke, Ryan Lochte (USA) was back in the pool, to take on his fellow team mate. Phelps was after his 6th gold and had no problem winning it. He put in a blistering performance leaving the pack snapping at his heels. With the crowd behind him all the way, the Baltimore Bullet went storming ahead of Cseh (1:56.52) and Lochte (1:56.52). Following the race the Speedo team were chatting to Michael’s sister Whitney about his performance, she said:
“Michael was unbelievable, I am lost for words. He’s got his 6th Gold and 6th World record - then we saw him on the podium to collect his medal and then he was straight back on the blocks for his semi. He’s like a machine!”
Joint WR holders and US team mates, Aaron Piersol and Ryan Lochte battled it out in the 200m Backstroke. They went head to head throughout the race but during the final lap the pair staged a dramatic dual. With only strokes to go, Lochte went ahead to take the gold and break a new WR at 1.53.94. Piersol picked up the silver (1.54.33) in a Speedo LZR Racer®. We spoke to Lochte’s father after the race, he told us:
“I always told him you can be good but to be the best you need to break the World Record and win an Olympic gold. This puts him at a different level”. Talking about what Ryan does in his spare time and his commitment to swimming he said:
“Ryan likes to surf, skateboard, have fun. Winning a gold medal is something else. This is just the start, he’s not done yet, we’re thinking as far ahead as 2016”.
World Champion and WR holder Leisel Jones (AUS) was fiercely challenged by Olympic Record holder Rebecca Soni (USA) in the 200m Breaststroke final today. It was Soni who clinched the gold medal with a WR of 2.20.22. Jones took the silver (2.22.05).
Libby Trickett (AUS) took to the blocks for the 100m Freestyle, after being thrown a lifeline following Jiaying Pang’s false start yesterday. She was determined to make her mark and got off to a good start. Pretty much the rest of the race saw her neck and neck with Britta Steffen (GER) but in the final stretch the German sneaked ahead to take gold. Trickett, wearing the Speedo LZR Racer® picked up silver at 53.16. Speedo sponsored athlete Natalie Coughlin bagged a bronze (53.39).
Within minutes of collecting his gold medal Phelps effortlessly won the first of the Men’s 100m Butterfly semifinals. In the second race current WR holder Ian Crocker (USA) also qualified for the finals.
After picking up a gold medal yesterday Speedo sponsored athlete Alain Bernard (FRA) was on top form for the 50m Freestyle semifinals. He got off to a great start finishing first. In the other semi final George Bovell (TRI) set a new Olympic Record in his Speedo LZR Racer® at 21.34. WR holder and Speedo sponsored athlete Eamon Sullivan (AUS) also qualified.
Speedo sponsored athletes, Kirsty Coventry (ZIM) and Margaret Hoelzer (USA) both qualified in the Women’s 200m.
After today’s swimming an amazing 67 WRs have been broken by athletes wearing the Speedo LZR Racer®. 19 out of a potential 21WRs at the games alone have been set by athletes wearing the fastest swimsuit in the world.
