The Thumb Catch drill promotes a vertical fingertip to elbow paddle which will enable you to pull yourself forwards sooner in the stroke.

Place both arms in front of you with your thumbs together. Pivot the elbows out wide and turn the finger tips downwards.

Try to shift your forearm into a vertical position to create a stronger catch on the water.

Carefully and gently glide the hand and arms back through the water, into the horizontal arm position before returning to the initial position.

Avoid breathing in this position. Perform as many catches as you can before resuming full stroke. You may add a snorkel if you wish.

Remember to keep a consistent kick throughout this drill.
