Welcome to the first issue of the Speedo Roma09 newsletter live from the Stadio del Nuoto poolside at the 13th FINA World Championships in Rome. We’ll be keeping you up to date with the latest results from the pool and news regarding our Speedo sponsored athletes and teams in and out of the water for the duration of the event.

The competition takes place within the Foro Italico complex in Rome which will house ‘The Village Roma09’ for the next 17 days. Over 185 countries will participate and 2,800 athletes will compete. 1,500 journalists will cover the FINA world championships, more than 200,000 spectators will attend the event and over 2,000,000,000 people world-wide will watch the competition on the television!

Excitement in The Village is tangible as FINA and its 2,000 strong team of volunteers prepare for the opening ceremony that takes place tomorrow at the Stadio dei Marmi at 8pm. The ceremony will include the traditional parade of all national teams taking part in the FINA World Championships.

Away from the pool there’s plenty to keep spectators occupied and entertained. The Speedo retail store opened in The Village Roma09 today. Stocking the exclusive Speedo Roma09 collection, the store is located in the Market District area of the Village dedicated to exhibitions and retail. Open to the public from 9am to midnight every day, more than 40,000 visitors are expected to visit the Market District during the World Championships.

Every evening from 9pm MTV Italy will be filming the ‘Total Request Live’ show live from The Village Roma09, with presenter and Italian celebrity Elisabetta Canalis hosting the show. This evening Italian pop star ‘Dolcenaro’ kicks off the festivities with a live performance.
