Brent started swimming from a young age, swimming with Mission Marlins for ten years from 1989-1999. He then moved to Chilliwack Spartans to continue his training. He is currently the Canadian record holder for 50metres, 100metres and 200metres freestyle both long course and short course.
In 2007 when Brent won Gold in 100metres freestyle at the World Championships, he was the first Canadian to hold an aquatic World title for 21 years.
At the 2010 commonwealth Games, Brent won Gold, becoming only the third person ever to break the 48second mark for 100metres freestyle without the aid of a non-permeable suit and the only person ever to break it in a knee suit.
