During her years in college, Marleen Veldhuis swam at national level and was invited to join the Dutch National water polo team. After she made a decision to focus on competitive swimming at age 23 only in 2002, her progression was remarkable.
Until 2009, she won a total of 51 medals at European- and World Championships and Olympic Games; 27 gold, 11 silver and 13 bronze. Her best disciplines are 50 and 100 freestyle and 50 and 100 butterfly.
She is expecting her first child in June 2010 and is planning to make her comeback afterwards.
Marleen is the current world record holder in the 50 metres freestyle short course. As part of the Dutch relay team, she holds the world record in the 4x100 and 4x200 metres freestyle short course and the 4x 100 metres freestyle long course.
